Colorado & U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Bust Drug Ring
Last week, the Denver Post published an article describing how “Operation White Whale”, a joint investigation by Colorado and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, has confiscated millions of dollars worth of cocaine, and over a million in cash in the 16 months of its operating. Two men from Colorado are accused of “violating the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, drug distribution and money laundering” (Denver Post).
This story is one of many examples showing how Colorado Law Enforcement is cracking down on drug trafficking, and those convicted are facing life-altering consequences.
Douglas County Penalty Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance – C.R.S. 18-18-403.5
“It is unlawful for a person knowingly to possess a controlled substance” such as Ecstasy, Cocaine, and Heroin (C.R.S. 18-18-403.5).
For both Ecstasy and Cocaine Possession, the penalties are as follows:
- Four grams or less – Class 6 felony
- More than four grams – Class 4 felony
Methamphetamine/Meth Possession:
- Two grams or less – Class 6 felony
- More than two grams – Class 4 felony
In Douglas County and throughout Colorado, a class 6 felony has a maximum prison sentence of 18 months, and a maximum fine of $100,000. A class 4 felony has a maximum of 6 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections and a $500,000 fine. Beyond prison time and fines, a drug conviction on your record will make it hard to be approved for housing and to find a job, as landlords and employers will be prejudice against you.
Unlawful Distribution, Manufacturing, Dispensing, or Sale in El Paso County
If you distribute, sell or manufacture controlled substances in El Paso County, the penalties and fines are even higher than those listed above.
C.R.S. 18-18-405 provides that “it is unlawful for any person knowingly to manufacture, dispense, sell, or distribute, or to possess with intent to manufacture, dispense, sell, or distribute, a controlled substance; or induce, attempt to induce, or conspire with one or more other persons, to manufacture, dispense, sell, distribute, or possess with intent to manufacture, dispense, sell, or distribute, a controlled substance; or possess one or more chemicals or supplies or equipment with intent to manufacture a controlled substance.”
